I hope you are all keeping safe in this ever changing and concerning times? The state governments are now in the process of starting to shut down the borders. All we can do is to take note of what the experts are telling us to do.
With this in mind, and as Girl Guides have already shut down all face to face activities, GGVic has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to develop ways of delivering Guides to girls at home via the internet.
At 9.00am Sunday, you should have all received a message – Girl Guides in your Pocket – with a link to a sneak peak of Girl Guides Victoria virtual Guiding – GGTV.
We are in the process of setting up Zoom classroom meetings for Kingston District – Carrum, Mentone & Beaumaris Guides. This will eventually enable all the girls to participate in an allocated time for each age group. So far we have had 3 meetings with 10 leaders, and another one for Monday night to implement our online girl guide meeting. These sessions are designed to help us navigate all the ins and outs of this type of online meeting.
So please if you haven’t already done so, have a look at the message that came through at 9.00am Sunday from GGV. We want to keep all the girls engaged and this is just one way of keeping in contact. The Zoom classroom is another.
I sincerely hope you are all prepared to let your daughters take part in the GGTV and the Zoom classroom sessions, once they get off the ground. These sessions will be strictly controlled, and will only be available to members on GGV data-base lists. It will enable girls to continue with Guides and will give them lots of interesting ideas to do at home, including badges, to hopefully keep them occupied while most of us are confined to home.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Tamara (Bickie) or Jan (Minga). Take care everyone in these ever changing and challenging times.
Please meet Abigail and Aurora!
Abigail and Aurora are twin 10 year old Girl Guides in the Southern Region. They have recently been awarded their Junior BP, love camping and attending State events.
Aurora and Abigail have accepted the role as Mentors for the next three years supporting the State Team by sharing their ideas and thoughts which will assist in shaping the decisions and the direction we will go in Girl Guides Victoria. VERY EXCITING!!!
One initiative that the Girl Guide Mentors have been working on is sending messages of thanks, support and encouragement to the many volunteers and impacted families within communities in the Gippsland region that have been devastated by bushfires. Please see Abigail and Aurora’s letters.
If Girl Guides or Girl Guide Units would like to participate please send letters (in one bundle) to arrive no later than the end of February 2020.
Attention: Aurora and Abigail
Joyce Price Centre
Suite 812, 401 Docklands Drive

Please place each letter into an envelope and separate letters into one pile for volunteers and another pile for families. Please leave them unsealed as we may add something extra into them.
BIG thanks in advance!!!
Any questions please ask in the comments.

As of January 2017, the Victorian Government introduced new legislation for managing staff and volunteers who come in contact with children. Girl Guides Victoria has always had strong processes to comply with the law and ensure that girls’ safety comes first.

Who needs to follow this process?
People interested in volunteering with Guides have lots of different reasons for wanting to volunteer. Some want to become Youth Leaders and work with girls on an on-going basis, while others want to volunteer with specific skills or on short-term projects; others just want to help out occasionally. Irrespective of the reason or frequency, the legislation and Girl Guide’s Victoria’s processes apply to ALL VOLUNTEERS who may come into contact with girls in Guides more than once a term. This includes a parent helper, a member of a support group, a unit leader, assistant leader or junior leader over 18, or those doing regular fundraising.
When can volunteers start?
Volunteers may begin regular (more than once a term) volunteering with Guides once they have met four criteria and are registered on our database as a member. These include:
- Two satisfactory personal character reference checks
- An approved Police Check
- A valid Working with Children Check
- Completed member registration details
All steps must be completed prior to any volunteer starting in their role. Please allow plenty of time BEFORE you want to start. The legislation is VERY clear that these checks are necessary before a volunteer can start work.
Note: When a Youth Member turns 18, she is considered by law to be an adult. Even if she is not finished school, attending Guides once 18 will require the same process to be followed. The Volunteer Coordinator will kick off this process; Unit leaders do not need to take any action.
If you are a volunteer that is ready to start with your Unit/District/Region, then just start the process by emailing us with your details (your name and Unit/District/Region) and theirs (name, email and the role that they’ll be volunteering in). We’ll take the next steps to get you registered.
Last night we started our Enviro Badge. Juniors & Gumnuts to complete 5 challenges for the badge. One from Awareness, Action, Service & Impact plus one extra. At guides last night, many guides completed two challenges (Impact – Recycling Game & Action – Story of the Earth).
Next week at guides, will make badges for the guides to wear stating to “Refuse plastics that escape as litter (e.g. straws, takeaway cups, utensils, balloons)”
